The series follows the Sun family, a peasant household in a rural village located in China's northwest, as they adjust to the epic changes sweeping the country between 1970s to 1980s. In the 1970s , Sun Shao Ping, a self-respecting farmer's boy, was studying in the former West County High School. He fell in love with Hao Hong Mei, but later she fell in love with their class monitor, Gu Yang Min, who came from a well off family. Tian Run Sheng, a friend from the same village and class, took justice into his own hands and beat up Gu Yang Min hard. The stubborn Shao Ping refused to admit that he was heartbroken, but he began to struggle with his high self-esteem and actively participated in rehearsals for regional performances.
